FORM + FIELD | HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE 2019
FORM + FIELD HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE 2019
You might be thinking, does art even make a good gift? If it’s the right piece for the receiver, then yes! Art will last a lifetime (or more), and you can take it with you as you move homes or spaces. Designers often say lighting is “the jewelry of the home”, but for us, art is the jewelry of the home!
We consider art purchasing to be a very personal process. Not every piece of art will speak to you or the person you’re giving to. It’s important to get familiar with a diverse range of art to get a sense of what resonates aesthetically and emotionally. Art isn’t just decorative; it can inspire creativity, trigger memories, or mark a time or place.
There’s also different kinds of art to consider: paintings, photographs or prints, sculptures, mixed media, drawings, and illustrations. We won’t go into the how of buying art here, but perhaps there will be a post on that in the future! In the meantime, you can request more help from these source’s complimentary art advisors.
Without further ado, here’s our favorite sources for starting an art collection on a budget:
SAATCHI ART
Saatchi Art is a large online marketplace connecting emerging artists to buyers. Each artist has a bio page where you can learn more about them, where they’ve exhibited, or who has collected their pieces. They also have a limited edition print collection for more affordable art.
They also host The Other Art Fair where can you meet and buy direct from the artists.
LOST ART SALON
Lost Art Salon is a San Francisco-based gallery specializing in the rediscovery of historically significant artists who have been lost to time. Their collection starts in the late 19th century through the present, but has a strong emphasis on 20th Century Modernism.
Most pieces are between $200-2000. You can shop online or in-store.
TAPPAN COLLECTIVE
Tappan focuses on showcasing emerging contemporary art through their online platform and art exhibitions.
CHAIRISH, 1STDIBS, EBTH
We love the hunt for hidden gems and some of our favorite sites for that include Chairish, 1stDibs, and Everything But The House (EBTH). Chairish and 1stDibs are marketplaces with mostly pre-owned work that are easy to filter for price and style. Pro tip: don’t be afraid to negotiate with the seller. EBTH brings estate sales online, and while they can be especially great places to find good deals, they do require more of a time investment.
